What kids movie is about a little girl befriending a kangaroo and then the kangaroo dies?

I am going crazy trying to rack my brain of the saddest movie I ever saw as a kid. I was probably only 4 or 5 (i'm almost 19 now) so I remember very sparse details; however, what I do remember is this: a little leaves her home for whatever reason and befriends a kangaroo and the kangaroo is killed by wolves or there is a scene with some violent wolves and the kangaroo is hurt or something to that effect. Thats all I honestly remember. I'm poking around online and am finding something called "Dot and the Kangaroo" and thinking that it may be it. Anyone else have any ideas?
